Eagulls Probably Hate YouBy Alex Donovan
Eagulls are playing at Noisey's stage at Beacons. Some say they're punk, some say they're the reincarnation of Oasis, so clearly, some people out there aren't doing their reseach. What is obvious, though, is that people are getting harder than American rowers for their music.
So I thought I'd call frontman George on his way home from work, like a slightly jealous girlfriend, to drill him on what the band is up to, Lara Croft and misanthropy.
Noisey: Hello, how’s it going?
George: Going good, brother.
So, are you looking forward to Beacons festival?
It'll be good because, like, there should be all us mates there and that who hang about with us in Leeds. Should hopefully get a good rider.
What can people expect to see from you?
I dunno, a performance? Nah, I dunno, it should be good to be honest, hopefully the sound should be good and everything, instead of a horrible festival sound, but I reckon they’ll have it down.
Have you had some bad experiences?
We once played a festival called Lions In The Field or Lions On The Farm, summit like that, and it was absolutely shit. They were like loads of bands playing, but everyone just played to no-one cos everyone was too busy watching fuckin’ Lara Croft or whoever she is. Whatshername?
…Lana Del Rey?
Yeah Lara Croft.
So, how are you preparing?
At the minute we’re writing an album... that could be preparing? We played a few gigs last week and, I dunno, just practicing some music really. Set list and shit really, then turn up and play it. Preparing at the pub as well, sometimes.
Three times a week, yeah?
More than that.
Gigs are pretty boring in general; you done any that stand out recently?
Well, I’ve seen a few blow-up dolls flying around the other day. Oh yeah, in Liverpool last week, we played at this creative arts space and everything got a bit wild, then someone found out that the floor had a door on it that went down to the cellar. So someone just opened the door in the pit and pushed someone fucking down into the cellar, that was pretty funny.
Hahahahahaha. I once saw someone bring a ladder to a gig and do that ladder dancing trick throughout the show. That was great. Anyway, where do you fit in to the punk scene?
Has there ever really been one? I still don’t know. I think a lot of people still listen to punk music and things like that but I dunno if there’s a scene any more. I think there used to be a hardcore scene but we’re not really anything to do with that to be honest. We always get labelled as hardcore, but I dunno who’s labelling us because we’re not a hardcore band. If they fucking used their brains…That was pretty negative, weren’t it?
It was a little yeah. So, what’s the best state to be in to listen to your music?
I’m usually a bit aggravated when I write my lyrics, so maybe a bit annoyed.
What kind of stuff pisses you off?
Erm, people piss me off. I hate people. It's just like, ordinary people, weird people, all types of people, I hate them. Do you know what I mean?
Absolutely. I'm a person and I fucking hate myself.
Like when you get on the bus and someone sits next to you, that’s fucking horrible ain’t it?
Yep, yep, stuff like that. I hate everyone. I hate lots of stuff, I hate buses as well.
Bus bastard buggers.
What’s your favourite type of eagle?
None. I don’t really like 'em.
What’s your favourite type of seagull?
Ones that don’t nick your chips.
What’s your favourite type of shark?
Lovely stuff. Catch you later, then.
Alright then, brother, speak to you in a bit.
