ALBUM RELEASE: Future Islands -- "On The Water"

By Sasha Hecht

Many people write music for the fame, the fortune, and (mostly) the babez. Sam Herring, frontman of Baltimore synthpop trio Future Islands, crafts songs with one intention and one intention alone: "I want you to cry. I want you to feel the way I feel. I want to crush." Well, HERRING SMASH with Future Islands' latest release, On the Water.

The band's third studio release is decidedly more toned-down and maudlin than their previous dance-happy crowdpleasers, but the album still heavily delivers on the "musical glitter glue": sparkling, infectious tracks that stick to you.

Critically lauded and widely regarded as the band's most impressive and inspired release yet, On the Water is out now via Thrill Jockey. Stream the album now via NPR and Spotify or, if you feel so inclined, drop some cold hard cash on it because hey, it's the retro thing to do!
