NOISEY 092: BEACHES
Date: 2011-05-12 | Venue: The Workers Club | Location: Melbourne, Australia /* | Genre: alternative */ ?>
Beaches
This Melbourne quintet imagines itself as “overdriven pop boogie psych kraut molten lava rock.” If you can see past that mouthful, you’ll find five women, three guitars, tons of hair, and a buttload of loud and uncompromising psych, sweetened with sun-drenched fuzztone.
Since forming in 2007, Beaches has become a dominant force in Australian music. Often called a supergroup, the band features members of Panel Of Judges, Love Of Diagrams, Spider Vomit, Dirtbag, Divorced, and a bunch of other bands you’ve probably never heard of. The girls take a collaborative approach to song writing, rocking through predominantly instrumental, jam-based tracks.
By now they’ve built a serious reputation. Their debut self-titled album was released in 2008 to broad acclaim, landing them a nomination for the coveted Australian Music Prize, a slot at All Tomorrow's Parties, and opening spots for Deerhunter, Mogwai, and Thee Oh Sees, among others.
After a self-released seven-inch and a 2010 EP on Mexican Summer Records, the band completed their second tour of the States, playing shows at SXSW and the Austin Psych Fest. Back in Melbourne, they’re taking a break from playing live and awaiting the birth of guitarist Alison Bolger's twins.
