NOISEY 106: MUKEKA DI RATO

Mukeka Di Rato
Like a bunch of other things 1995 birthed, Mukeka di Rato is crude, sarcastic, aggressive, brash, and has a bit of an attitude problem. For almost two decades, Brazil’s most recognized hardcore band has been churning out high-caliber, bratty post-punk that both offends and enthralls.
While it’s doubtful that Mozine, Brek, Sandro, and Paulista ever imagined that, in sixteen years’ time, their sordid little Vila Velha project would end up taking them on tours throughout Brazil, South America, Europe, and Japan, that’s exactly what happened. The degenerate rockers chalk a good deal of this success up to an equation that they’ve developed for their own kind of “math rock”: sarcasm, plus fast bass and hard vocals, minus love letters and divided by simple rhymes. True to form, this approach has proven itself from Sobrevivência, their first demo tape, to Atletas de Fristo, their latest studio release, and through countless albums, EPs, compilations, tour DVDs, and music videos in the interim.
It takes a solid dose of gall to profess that your own band has “come together to destroy the world”, but Mukeka di Rato does so unapologetically… and we just can’t seem to stay mad at them.
