Vibe is a tough concept to describe, and an even tougher one to nail. On the Early Morning EP, the French duo Isaac Delusion perfectly defines the contours of airy indie-electro, elevating it to something far more nuanced and deeply therapeutic. Imagine a cool drink of lemonade, or a well-timed breeze: This is a record that will handily take the edge off the most ass-clenching of hangovers, and it easily gets our vote for best thing I heard this week. Stream it below, and then I'll say a few more words about it.
The EP succeeds on the strength of the songwriting, and the duo's almost alarming attention to detail, which recalls Björk's best moments on Vespertine ("Purple Sky") and Arthur Russell's profound understanding of vocal melody ("Transistors"). The key to this EP is introversion: The inward-facing tracks seem to have been crafted by hand in heavy isolation, presumably at a high altitude and far, far away from the city.
Early Morning is out in the US on February 26 through Cracki Records (via the French Kiss Label Group), and you can order your own copy right here. You can also catch the duo (which expands to a trio for live performances) on a short tour this spring: Dates are below.
