Why Is Kanye West Calling His Child North West?

Among the strait-jackets, tantrum lead Timberlake bashing rants and bizarre off the cuff interviews, it’s been pretty easy to forget that Kanye West is soon to be a father. And, let's also not forget the fact that his bun is in Kim Kardashian's oven, who cannot be trusted with a kitten, let alone a poop-stained baby.

Yesterday the world’s media reported that ‘Ye junior is going to be called “North West”. The idea, obviously, is ridiculous. Not only because the moniker doesn’t fit in with Kardashian tradition but also because it’s obviously a joke. Nevertheless, the rumour spread through the internet, catalysed by the “news” (lookin' at you TMZ) that Kanye’s sixth record is going to be titled “I Am God”

We wondered what the general public consensus was regarding baby North. Is the name a work of art? Is it a lame joke made up by tabloid journalists? Is Kanye West God? We took to the streets of London to find out.

What do you think about Kanye naming his child 'North West'?

Nah, not North West, that’s an area. They need to find something proper, a proper name. He’s taking the piss out of the child, the child’s gonna get bullied.

But it’ll be KimYe’s child…

It doesn’t matter, North West is just a stupid name in general, it doesn’t matter who the parents are!

What do you think about Kanye calling his album I Am God?

Everyone is entitled to what they’re doing; you can’t stop no one. But really and truly he’s not God, that’s in his own mind. God is God. There’s only one man up above but really and truly he can do what he wanna do, you can’t stop him innit?

Are you offended by it?

Not really because I don’t pray to Kanye West. I don’t see him as God or anything. He’s just a human being. He's just doing stuff like that to catch people’s eye. It’s just about attention grabbing.

What do you think about Yeezy?

I think he’s an idiot! He's probably just under pressure or going through something. But then again, people like him mix up in a lot of things…

Like…drugs?

Could be yeah. To perform sometimes, to keep them going they need drugs. Them kind of people, they always die of overdoses or some kind of stupidness.

Nadia: Oh! I read about that earlier today…I think he’s just messing around with the press.

Regina: Yeah, I don’t believe it. I like that Kanye does that kind of thing. He likes to cause a little bit of controversy.

What do you think about the the onstage rants?

Regina: He probably does it on purpose. Even with the Taylor Swift thing, it just gives him good press doesn't it?

Nadia: He definitely doesn’t bite his tongue. Same with the fashion he wears, it’s always a bit out there.

Is his honesty and outspokenness something to be admired in the music industry?

Nadia: Yeah, he’s probably his best publicist. You either love him or hate him. He’s a bit like Marmite isn’t he?

Regina: People like that always make a bit of an impact. Same with Lady Gaga, you either love her or hate her. But he probably has a strong following for that reason.

Is that a tradition? I don’t really follow celeb stuff but that seems equally ridiculous. Let the kid have its own identity!

I think he’s been off his rocker for a while. Last thing I remember is the Taylor Swift thing, that was kinda the last straw for me.

To sum it up, I think he’s just very egotistical and slightly lost in his own impression of who he thinks he is but actually, if he took a look outside of that he’d realise that actually he’s being ridiculous.

I just think that Kim got into it too quickly but I don’t think she will affect his music. If anything, he’d use her to make his music better.

I like the way that he can sample something and make it his own but not ruin the sample or take the mickey out of the old track. He does it justice. He definitely knows how to produce and make a tune. I like his old stuff, his old hip-hop stuff. He needs to just remember that it’s all about the music and just remember where he came from.
