Klyne Capture One of Life's Greater Beauties on "Closer"

Warning! This video features a clown.

Warning! Klyne's latest video features a clown. So if you have some sort of deep-seated emotional issue with Ronald McDonald or your childhood wasn't calm enough to accept a circus man in your life, look away now. If not, then hello! Welcome. Prepare to watch a man with intense blue hair and a painted face body-pop his way through the woods.

"Closer" is the follow-up to Klyne's debut video "Paralyzed". The band say it's "about someone going to the extreme in order to reach their lifelong desire, and at the same time coping with the fear that their fate might already be decided". Expanding on this, the band go on to say "one of life's greater beauties is when a person breaks free of these psychological limitations".

"That’s the simple story we wanted to convey with this song - that and a ridiculous topline."

Klyne are only a few tracks into their career, yet it's clear that within their infectious and effortless sound, the groove-laden soulful masterstrokes they've painted over the top of their production will be something they become known for. The topline on "Closer" is indeed ridiculous. It's what we're celebrating them for right now. There's a darker side though too. Ferdous Dehzad's has shaded the production on "Closer" with a looming sort of synth, like the sound of an impending break down, or a man in a wig stalking you through the woods in broad daylight.

Noisey: You have a clown in the video. What's the thinking there?
Klyne: The song's kind of emotionally loaded, and for that reason we wanted the clip to be a bit more playful rather than emotional. The director, Jon Olav Stokke, came up with the brilliant idea of getting a clown involved, which is the perfect way of capturing the emotions whilst being playful.

How did he get from clown school to the woods?
By taking an Uber.

It seems like there's a theme going on too - your last video, "Paralyzed", features dancing people. Can you guys dance? Will we be seeing a "Hotline Bling"-esque video from Klyne?
I think because "Paralyzed" and "Closer" both felt kind of dance orientated, which made it an obvious move to make the videos dance orientated as well. We admire people who are able to capture a certain ambiance or emotion through their choreography, so it was amazing to have these people dance on our music. However we're awful dancers, so the results of a "Hotline Bling"-esque video from Klyne would be disastrous.

The video is for your latest track "Closer". Is that forming an EP or an album of some sort?
Yeah we’re releasing "Closer” with our previous release "Paralyzed/Entropy” on a 12” vinyl along with a new forthcoming track called "Waiting”. We’re currently writing our album, which will be out next year.

What music should we look out for from the Netherlands?
Palmbomen is a fantastic artist. He probably doesn't live in the Netherlands anymore but his music is amazing.

Pre-order the vinyl from Aesop here. The video is directed by Jon Olav Stokke.
