Style Rider: MUNA Loves Pink Tees and Fake Carnations

"Nothing lasts forever except for fake carnations."

MUNA are a band that scream girl power. With a lot of love for pink, sticking up for ladykind and dark clothing, MUNA make “dark pop” that makes you want to cry and dance at the same time. The trio—Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson—make music that comes with the perfect amount of emo—covering the bases of sex, anger, heartbreak, and euphoria. The trio released their debut EP, More Perfect, back in 2014, but just dropped new single “Loudspeaker” following “Promise” earlier this year, which brings to mind a catchier version of Haim that parallels Kate Bush.

If you’re looking for an EP or full-length from these guys in the immediate future, you can stop right there. The band wants their singles to get the attention they deserve before putting more music out into the world. We’ve got some serious respect for that because MUNA wants to be taken seriously. And why wouldn’t we want to see a girl power-fueled band succeed?

You can see what the ladies of MUNA rely on when they’re making music and are on tour—and every part of their necessities emanates positivity.

COATS AND CIGARS (BUT MOSTLY COATS)

"Because, what a great way to let people know not to fuck with you or your girls. We live in LA and often times the hardest thing about it is not being able to express our love for heavy, dark clothing."

LIGHT PINK SHIRTS FROM UNIQLO

"We have so many of these (in all colors, but mostly pink). You can wear your pink shirt while you cry pink tears into pink cups #pinklifestyle. We love these shirts because it makes it super easy for us to coordinate when we play and because they are light enough to dance in without completely sweating through."

FAKE CARNATIONS

"Nothing lasts forever except for fake carnations and because of that we use them at every show. There are lots of amazing fake flower shops in downtown LA that feel like little self-contained dystopian worlds, where everything is abundant and beautiful but also fake. Metaphor much?"

ABLETON LIVE

"You can actually keep nail polish on if the main instrument you play is your computer. In all seriousness, though, we do work on this program everyday, and putting in work makes you cute. (This is science.)"

HEADPHONES THAT CONNECT TO EACH OTHER VIA INTERNAL SPLITTERS

"Because, don’t talk to us, we’re on business calls. Additionally, this is a must-have for producers who live in duplexes, apartment buildings or with non-musicians, because we can’t always listen to ourselves through monitors."

T BY ALEXANDER WANG BOMBER JACKET

"Because Josette has one, and it’s 2fly, and everyone else in the band wants one too *hint, hint, Santa*

* Update: Naomi purchased one, but we will probably start a kickstarter for Katie’s."
