Sometimes the music that makes you feel the most alone is the music that makes you feel the most alive. That's what Jimmy Whispers—a well-documented weirdo from Chicago (seriously, do yourself a favor and read this lovely profile in the Chicago Reader)—specializes in. Below, Noisey has the premiere of the first single available to the public “(Summer in Pain)” from his upcoming album of the same name. On first listen, this dude’s voice reminds me of a bunch of strange songwriters—Jeff Mangum and Daniel Johnston in particular—tossed into a blender. But it's bigger than imitation. There's a certain charming honesty about it, even though he's probably the type of person that's difficult to have a conversation with because he's so wrapped up in trying to figure out What It All Means™. This is the kind of music that embraces the introspective look at life, where mentally you feel like you're walking into a wall over and over and over again—until you widen your perspective and realize that, shit, there was a door right next to you the entire time.

Summer in Pain comes out on March 24 via Moniker, and you can pre-order it here.
