PREMIERE: Watch "Ultraviolence" the New Video for Pleasure Symbols

It has absolutely nothing to do with Lana Del Ray.

Brisbane synth duo Pleasure Symbols just sent us the video for their track “Ultraviolence” and it’s an absolute cracker.

We first came across the dark and heavy synth of Jasmine Dunn from Occults and artist Phoebe Sheehy (Phoebe Paradise) when they played a Melbourne show a few weeks ago and we’ve been big fans since.

Produced by Alex Dunlop the film clip comes across as ominous and dark with a “release the hounds” vibe as a running dog is accompanied by somber and swirling synth and bass lines. Recorded and mixed by Multiple Man’s Chris Campion, the track is a teaser for a forthcoming relese the band hope to have out in early 2015.

We had a chat to Jasmine about the video and song.

Noisey: Whose dog is that? I'm sure it's lovely but backed by the music it seems quite menacing.
Jasmine Dunn: That’s our dog Tulip who we adopted about a year ago. She’s really very passive and a total sweetheart.

Did you start Pleasure Symbols with the intention of always playing as a two piece? What do you find to be the benefits/limitations of being a duo?
It has always been the intention to keep everything as simplistic and minimalist as possible and that’s a lot more attainable with having only Phoebe and myself to write the songs. There’s bass guitar, a synthesizer and a drum machine and there doesn’t need to be any more, it’s more enjoyable having it so uncomplicated.

I cringe at the term cold wave but where do you see yourselves sitting/positioned in the current Aussie scene with bands like Multiple Man, Nun and others?
The cold wave tag is a nod to the first European wave not the resurgence of it in America in the 90’s. I think the music we’re writing is pretty devoid of emotion and empathy and isn’t too far removed from it. Of course we are fans of Nun and Multiple Man, but some of my favourite releases this year have come from the likes of Exek, Exhaustion and Gold Class. If that shows our musical leanings in the current Australian scene.

What are your upcoming plans?
We’re currently writing new songs and refining the others. I hope someone would like to release them in the new year so that can focus our spending on more sensible purchases such as top shelf spirits. A tour in early 2015 is also on the cards.
