Emily Edrosa’s ‘Corner of the Party’ Video Is Like Karaoke on Acid

The New Zealand musician transcends time and space in the visual mind fuck that is her corner of the party.

Emily Edrosa is the solo project of Emily Littler, one third of Auckland’s Street Chant and host of 95bFM’s Tuesday Drive.

Typically Littler doesn’t hold back when it comes to saying exactly what's on her mind but her solo work takes on more of a poetic form and allows her space to work on videos with New Zealand instagram celeb Ra Pomare (@rapomare) AKA DJ Mall Sushi. Rapomare’s commentary on the New Zealand flag debate and the Rugby World Cup will be familiar to Aucklanders who use social media for more than health food accounts and checking in on the Fat Jew.

Noisey: Ra Pomare has always managed to cram a lot content into his 15 second online clips. What was he like on a full length video?
Emily Littler: This was probably the most low key video I’ve done. The only drama was that I forgot my make up so had to cab to the mall and get some nice ladies to apply some for free. We had no plan, just shot some stuff, drank heaps of coffee and I kept yelling at him to make me look hot. He did an ok job with that. His house at the time was kind of a shack so I had to make sure I didn’t bounce around too much or the camera would shake. I was just singing in front of the green screen and trusted Ra’s aesthetic from his instagram vids, I am not sure he knew what he was going to do but he said later he wanted it to be like a nightmare where you get up to sing on acid at a karaoke bar and see yourself on the screen.

The song has light elements but it's also kind of dark in some ways.
The guitar is quite pretty and I always thought of it as quite a light song but I guess the lyrics are dark. The EP is sort of about spending too much time on the internet and this song is one of the more oblique songs under that theme. It’s about hanging out and doing something seemingly fun but shit getting real dark. I’m into lyrics and narratives normally but this song is more about the vibe and imagery. I used pagan imagery a lot as it seemed to fit with the theme of this EP especially things like the witch trials with the way people can be chastised on the Internet and online mob mentality.

Do you even like parties?
Only ones with free alcohol.

The Emily Edrosa EP is available from Bandcamp and a limited edition vinyl copy pressed by Fluff Records will be available soon through Rough Trade.
