Drunk and Bong Smoking Claymated Characters Star In Mope City’s New Video

The Sydney trio have created a music video that can be classified as both cute and slightly disturbing.

Guns and Roses and the Smiths may have missed the memo but it’s a known fact that the band that makes Claymation together stays together. So it goes with Sydney trio Mope City who have spent a decent amount of time sculpting coloured Play Doh creating the video for “Small Eye”, a track from their new three-song 7” Halfway House.

The video, which is kind of like Wallace and Gromit drinking a half case of Hammer and Tongs in a Marrickville share house, was made by all three Mope City members over some late nights.

As singer-guitarist Matt Neville explains, “It took ages as we had to make the characters and move each one for each frame without breaking the clay because it’s really delicate. Within the first month we did about three separate sessions. We took heaps of pictures and spent a couple of nights on it, then when it came time to put it together it filled out about 20 seconds, which is less than a quarter of the song, ha.”

The track itself has that weary, non-plussed and lackadaisical charm that if released in 2001 Spin magazine would no doubt be calling “slacker-esque”.

The band seem too busy for something as time intense as Claymation with Neville also involved in Day Ravies, Snotty Babies and Drown Under, singer-bassist Amaya Lang also plays in Snotty Babies and drummer Sam Wilkinson juggles King Tears Mortuary, Day Ravies, Beef Jerk and Shrapnel.

The band’s debut album is currently being mixed. In the meantime check the vid and see them at one of the shows posted below.
