Average Rap Band Just Released Five Videos in Five Days

To celebrate the release of their 'Stream of Nonsenseness' EP, Average Rap Band have made a video for each track.

Melbourne based Kiwis Average Rap Band, recently released their Stream of Nonsenseness EP. In anticipation of their Noisey presented tour of upper New Zealand they’ve pulled together their meagre funds to make a video for every track from the EP.

Born from the ashes of @peace, one of New Zealand’s favourite hip hop groups in recent years, lyricists Tom Scott and Lui Tuiasau return to a more fundamental form, shaking off the existential space rap and romantic angst of their earlier works.

The five-day video project began as a series that would fit together as one piece, but finding themselves dressed as 70s R&B group the Floaters re-enacting the choreography of “Float On”, the realisation dawned that they may have been a tad overzealous.

Scott likens the process to a failed Curb Your Enthusiasm episode. But the result is a unique glimpse into the lives of two struggling musicians navigating life in a strange land and dealing with undercover tram cops and even fewer fans than they had back home.

Check out "Long Snooze", the final and fifth video that we are premiering below.

Noisey: With the amount of shit rap bands out there, average is a pretty good place to be sitting.
Tom: After research we found that that we sat on the bell curve. Somewhere between Shabazz Palaces and Pitbull.

Lui: Yeah, we're better than Pitbull… I think. But he could probably beat us both up. I've seem him knock a fan out and then carry on with the show without fucking up the lyrics. Which are hardly lyrics but, I was impressed. Actually, I take that back. Pitbull is in my top 5.

In "Mother Mary" you ask who still listens to trap. I'm guessing you weren't tempted to start an average trap band?
Tom: I still listen to trap. That wasn't a shot fired at trap music. But what I can't fuck with is when people make that music without having been through the experience that created that music. When dudes make trap music but don't understand the history of the genre. Never been to a trap. That's like making blues music when you've never had the blues. Or Donald Trump making punk. It just doesn't feel right to me. So with that line I was really just getting at lazy producers making the same tired ass trendy high hat patterns. I'm not that old rapper bitter at the state of hip hop. I think this year's been one of the best ever to be honest. I'm just tired of unoriginal musicians that emulate shit they don't really understand and in doing so insult and discredit the ones doing it honestly.

What do you have coming up?
Tom: Our average album is coming out in December. It sounds nothing like this last project. It sounds like the seed of spring blossoming within winter's womb.

Lui: Oh and we should probably plug the tour. Which actually, we had no money so it's just two shows cause we couldn't afford to fly to the South Island cause we made the stupid decision to make 5 videos.
