White Walls Get Epic on Their Upcoming Double Album

The Melbourne trio take a healthy respect for '90s guitar rock and shove it through a guitar pedal or ten.

From the White Album to Exile on Main Street, Zen Arcade to Double Nickels on the Dime, the double vinyl LP has proven to be an artistically ambitious concept. Melbourne shredders White Walls have taken on this challenge by releasing, Afterthoughts In Limbo their second album as a double on their own Pet Moth label.

Like their debut album, guitars rule supreme (the trio don’t even worry about bass) and “Light Bulbs” the first single from the record features the band’s signature Swervedriveresque guitar tone, reverb and feedback backed by some sweet vocal melody.

We caught up with guitarist number one Fuj to find out more about the album.

Noisey: Self-releasing a double LP vinyl can be challenging. What have learned from the experience?
Fuj: Yep it has been a long and painful journey considering we recorded in 2013. We always thought it’d be cool to have our own little label at some point and this new album will be the first official release of Pet Moth Records and also the final nail in our collective financial coffins. Ha! After this whole ordeal we’ve definitely learnt to never again do a double LP, patience is a virtue and instant coffee and noodles are essential factors throughout the recording process.

What are your favourite double LP gatefold records?
Mine is Thin Lizzy’s Live and Dangerous, Dylan likes The Beatles’ White Album and Rory’s favourite is Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation.

What song on your new album is your favourite?
It differs from time to time but I’ll have to go with the last track “Over". There’s some pretty serious Sonic Youth worship going on and a ten-minute outro with a stupid amount of overdubbed guitars.

You also have another album already in the bag. Is that because you are prolific or just because the last one has taken a while to come out?
It’s maybe a bit of both. We have been waiting around a long time to release “Afterthoughts” but luckily that hasn’t really bummed us out in the writing department. Yeah the third alum is almost done, all the music is there, we just have to stick some lyrics to a few bits. Writing for album four has also commenced. We’re way backed up.

From Maggot Fest or Day Ravies you are a band who are able and willing to play on a variety of shows with a variety of bands.
We all listen to different things so I guess when we write it all amalgamates into one entity. We're really into playing mixed bill shows, being the heavy band on a poppy sort of night or being the complete pansy band on a punk/hardcore night. Either way it's happened a number of times now so I guess people are into it.

Did you ever find out who stole your iPod at the Mindsnare show?
Nope that thing is long gone. I’ve got everything backed up at home, it was mostly the general anger I felt when I noticed it was missing. Luckily the Mindsnare pit was kicking off so I could just seep into that and get shoved around a bunch. Although the new White Walls album was on there if that rascal so had the desire on leaking it, probably have to be a more successful band for that to occur though!

‘Afterthoughts In Limbo’ will be available soon on Pet Moth records.
