We’ve Invited the Police Force to Our Brisbane Party Next Week

The band will be launching their tape ‘Power Point’ at a show including Thigh Master and Woodboot.

Even in 2015 it takes a brave (and perhaps slightly bonkers) Brisbane band to be calling themselves Police Force. For the city’s cops have a long history and reputation as being less than straight and their ‘punch first ask questions later’ approach during the Joh Bjelke-Petersen years in particular seemed fairly ‘hands on’. Some say that things haven’t improved that much.

But a newish Brisbane band have set about changing the public’s perception of Queensland policing through their avant garde and post-Internet rock and roll music.

Police Force’s new tape Power Point is awash with guitar over dubs reverb and ciggie smoke that produces a strong dubby Sun Araw vape vibe. It’s certainly more relaxing than riding a speed bump from the back of a police divisional unit.

Their new video for “Love” taken from the tape is masterful in its minimalism. We understand that Brisbane can be relaxed but it doesn’t get much more relaxed as sitting in a dark room, chatting with your mates, checking your phone and dartin’ hard.

We like their style and so have invited them to play our Brisbane party at Trainspotters next Thursday August 6. Joining them will be Woodboot and Thigh Master. Entry is free but a gold coin donation is encouraged to help out our friends at OXJAM. You also need to RSVP but don’t sweat because you can do that right here.

In the meantime read our quick interview with Sam from Police Force.

Noisey: Historically Brisbane has had some pretty brutal police forces. How does the current force stack up?
Sam Hill: Badly. They stack up badly and we do not condone their actions. I would like to state that our band Police Force is not associated with any law enforcement agency.

“Love” has a pretty nice Spaceman 3 vibe going on.
Jason Spaceman/Pierce is a degenerate freak. I can't stand him. The guy has to cheer up.

What is going on in the video besides ‘three dudes sitting on the floor smoking ciggies’?
A friend of ours has all these grand delusions about becoming a director and has all these ideas about 'minimalism' and 'art'. I haven't even seen it.

How many guitars are on your tape?
There are about two or two and a half guitar tracks on most of the songs. We're talking about 14 guitar tracks dubbed across the whole thing. Not an outlandish number.

Daniel Spencer from Blank Realm likened you to the good bits of Snapper and that in the live setting you are quite funky. How much should be believe Daniel?
We try to lay the funk on thick so I can verify that, yeah. That man can be trusted.

How good is the new Blank Realm album going to be?
We got faith in the Realm. I reckon it'll be pretty good, quite possibly even really good.

‘Power Point’ is available now from Tenth Court.

Catch Police Force, Thigh Master and Wood Boot at the Noisey/OXJAM party at Trainspotters Thursday August 6. Entry is free with a gold coin donation but you need to RSVP here.
