Swiping your band name from the deep songbook of econo-jamming, godhead punks the Minutemen takes cojones. But for Philly sludge noise-rockers Split Red, bass king Mike Watt has got their back. The bludgeoning rippers—featuring members of jazz/metal slayers Many Arms, schizoid art-pop heads Deleted Scenes and weirdo avantsters, Cuddle Magic—have shared the stage with the flannel flyin’ legend and ascribe to the 80s SST Records ethos: staunch DIY roots, get in the van, fuck shit up and make your voice heard.

On their awesomely-titled upcoming debut Serious Heft, Split Red—led by the muscular Melvins disciple Stephen Buono and singer Nebadon Adams—gnash through AmRep/Touch & Go-sized punk skuzzery and metallic slow burners. There’s even a machine gun solo from finger-hopping, banjo-destroying maestro, Brandon Seabrook.

One of the album standouts is "Un Poco Foco," whose title is a play on jazz icon Bud Powell's “Un Poco Loco”—“Foco” meaning the "center," or focus of people's movement. It's a politically-minded punk rock coiled bash where Split Red show just how serious they are.

Watch the video for the track below, premiering today on Noisey, and look for their self-titled album on October 14 via New Atlantis Records.
