An acronym for Put It On You, "PIOY", the latest from New Zealand pop wunderkind Pikachunes is full of those moody, slow building synths that evoke sultry tension. It’s a song about doing stuff in the parking lot outside the club. Something is going to get put on someone.It’s also a unique look at love in the millennial age.Pikachunes, aka Miles G. Loveless, AKA Miles McDougall, is a young guy with a jazz background. “Writer’s Block, the first single from his forthcoming album Allely, was big beat and dancey but on his latest track we hear from a mature and more complex Miles. But this makes sense given the two years he's spent working on the record.Miles has just announced May 30 as the album release date and Noisey are excited to announce and present a three-stop New Zealand advance listnening party (dates below).We caught up with Miles to chat about the new track, the album, and post-romanticism. Miles McDougall: This album takes from various past relationships of mine, but does have a strong focus on one relationship in particular, my marriage. This was a period of strong personal turmoil, battles with substance abuse, and of course the breakdown of a lifelong commitment. All of which made for a lot of time with pen to pad.Is that feeling indicative of the album?
The feeling is indicative of where I've been at for the past two years and is reflected throughout the album.The tracks we've heard so far are less simple than your previous work; more epic build ups, more detailed synth work. Are you doing all the playing on the record?
I have been lucky to work with the extremely talented James Goldsmith. I bought the record to him in its demo form from what I had recorded in my room. He loved the songs and we got to work rebuilding the synths and fleshing out the tracks with live instrumentation. We were also able to convince a few of our talented musicians/producers including Sam McCarthy, Jeremy Toy, and Grayson Gilmour to help us out as well.
