Quitter Are Doing Their Bit In Keeping Baltimore Dark and Weird

The synth punks dummies will rip your face off in a Cronenburg inspired assault of loud and putrid music.

Quitter are a Balitmore band who play loud and weird synth rock that’s influenced as much by schlocky horror as it is munted and mutated punk.

The story goes that William hit up Mark Plasma because he was wearing a Goner records pin. What started as a straight Germs/Reatards type band got weirder as new members - Zach, Josh, Nick, and now Heather – joined the fold.

They’ve just released their debut 7” on Blow Blood records and it blasts some heavy and bugged out vibes. Check “Altered Flesh” below then take a long shower.

We caught up with Mark Plasma to find out more.

Noisey: How did a band from Baltimore end up on a label run by an Aussie who lives in Cleveland?
Mark Plasma: Last year Christina from Blow Blood went on tour with Royal Headache and we opened their Baltimore show. She liked what she saw and we had recently finished the EP so everything just fell together. We love a lot of music from both Cleveland and Australia so working with her was a no-brainer.

What makes for a good live show?
Energy. Even at our sloppiest, when the energy is there everyone has a good time.

It seems you are influenced by 80s schlock horror.
We’re more likely to agree on movies, books, and comics than anything else. Lamberto Bava, Dario Argento, David Cronenberg, Samuel R. Delaney, Katsuhiro Otomo, and Gary Panter have all hugely influenced our aesthetics and songwriting.

Another famous Baltimore schlock son is John Waters. Do you see him around?
We’re Waters fans, too, and sometimes he drops into the bars where a few of us work. The first time Heather saw him she was bartending a packed Baltimore club night and he appeared behind the beer taps. She must’ve looked surprised because he started laughing and shouted “Well, Sally, get her some seltzer! This girl’s seen a ghost!” before he disappeared.

The Quitter EP is available now through Blow Blood records.
