PREMIERE: Stranger Cat - "Unzip Your Skin"

What happens when your heart gets broken and a neuromuscular disease flares up? Well if you're Stranger Cat you write some sweet music.

The conception of great art is never easy is it? It's an unfortunate truism that for one, happy makes hungry, and two if you're content are you creating? Often not. So it is here with duo Stranger Cat. Back in the summer of 2012 Singer Cat Martino—a frequent collaborator of Sufjan Stevens, Son Lux, and Sharon Van Etten—went through a really shitty break up with her boyfriend and co-producer. So far, so whatever, but this turmoil coupled with the reawakening of a neuromuscular illness sent her into a deep depression.

She abandoned her spiraling lifestyle in NYC and headed to the California coast to heal her heart (and her body) and write songs, eventually collaborating with Sven Britt who completes the Stranger Cat partnership. Toghether they created—In The Wilderness—which features guest appearances from Sufjan Stevens, Christopher Powell (Man Man), Darby Cicci (The Antlers) and Reggie Pace (Bon Iver), among others.

Above is their single "Unzip Your Skin" which hangs in a starry galaxy alongside Bat For Lashes, Kate Bush, Chew Lips, and Purity Ring—a gauzily gorgeous topline floating over stuttered beats and cut and paste vocal backing. Sometimes I do wish I could unzip my skin and throw it in the ocean. How did they know?
