Stream Dizz1’s New Record ‘In Sickness & In Health’

The Melbourne dj and drummer has enlisted Aloe Blacc, Sadat X and Frank Nitt to guest on his debut album.

Melbourne-based turntablist, producer and drum kit expert Dave Norris aka Dizz1, has been active on the world hip hop stage for some time. Having played Sonar 2010, attended the Red Bull Music Academy in Spain; and performed alongside De La Soul, Mos Def, DJ Vadim, Gaslamp Killer, DJ Krush, and Tokimonsta, he’s earned his stripes with a hip hop style that references reggae, jungle and dub.

After a couple of EPs Dizz1 is set to release his debut album In Sickness & In Health on UK label Tru Thoughts. He has managed to team up with some of his favourite MCs including Tame One, Sadat X, Om’Mas Keith, Motley, Aloe Blacc & Frank Nitt who drop rhymes over his beats.

We caught up with Dave to find out more.

Noisey: You lived in Japan for some time. How was that?
Dizz1: I spent a year there as an exchange student when I was 15 and then another year there when I was 20/21 skating, throwing parties and putting together scratch routines with my fam the Def Cut Delegatz.

I also blagged a job as an English teacher in a little school in the Kinshicho area of Tokyo. At one point I was teaching a class to two 18 month olds! I still laugh thinking about that. Holding up little plastic fruit in front of them and saying “Orange! Apple!” One of the kids was on point APUURUUU!!! The other just rolled around and dribbled. You have worked with some big names. Who was the biggest dick?
Ha! There was one guy who insisted he couldn't get anything done without first having a couple of drinks to loosen up. It started out fine and cheery but after a while shit started getting messy and I couldn't really understand what he was on about. That guy did my head in hard. You have come cool names on the record. How did you hook up with Sadat X? Some of that early Brand Nubian stuff was solid.
Yeah that was a real blessing! It was through a friend of mine. I told Sadat another mate of mine was going through a rough time on drugs and every time I reached out I would get abused or lied to. I wrote the beat with my friend in mind so when Sadat came back with that vocal I was touched! Man that track resonates with me on so many levels! Shouts to the one like Derek X! RESPECT!

‘In Sickness & In Health’, is available May 25 through Tru Thoughts.
