Listen to Cherry Death’s Ragged Excursions Into Rock and Roll Riffage

Glow God’s Tim Buchanan steps out with an emphasis on Crazy Horse and J Mascis styled roots rock.

While Oklahoma City shredders Glow God are on hiatus as they wait for their bassist to return from working in Berlin, guitarist and vocalist Tim Buchanan has been busy with Cherry Death.

Whereas Glow God (named after a Melvins song), come with a hardcore Mudhoney vibe, Cherry Death shreds with more of an emphasis on a Crazy Horse/J Mascis roots rock and poppy psych.

Two recent Cherry Death releases Flowers for Jesus and Bite My Nails are sublime excursions into ragged rock and roll guitar riffage.

Tim answered some questions from Minneapolis where he and the band are on tour.

I can hear 70s outsider pop and elements of shoe gaze in your music too. How did you describe your sound when assembling your band?
Everyone joining happened pretty naturally. I think a lot of the inspiration came from various textural pop music and a desire to explore new sonic territory. I'm more interested in removing as much of the active thought process as possible from writing and playing than I am in referencing specific bands. We like rock and roll.

You have two recordings at the moment Flowers For Jesus and Bite My Nails. What is the difference?
Flowers For Jesus is a full length that was assembled over the course of several months in my bedroom, primarily with a cheap usb mic and with the help of several trusted friends. Most of the writing and playing wasn't premeditated, and everyone who helped out was recorded shortly after hearing the songs for the first time. Bite My Nails contains three songs recorded at Dust House over the course of a couple weeks.

What is the latest news with Glow God?
Glow God will be playing Tü Fest in September. Everyone is spread out at the moment between Austin, Kansas City, OKC and Berlin but we do have a recorded LP waiting to be mixed.

Oklahoma reportedly has the highest rate of police shooting in the nation. Do you have any tips for staying safe?
No, not really. Exercising caution and excessive respect for the cretins and/or not being a person of color can help.
