Listen to A Big Old Chunk of Nonchalance With Beef Jerk's 'Cotton'

The cover of Beef Jerk’s last 7-inch featured a schooner of beer, a steamed bun and a bottle of Sriacha hot sauce. So even if it wasn’t a complete musical match, I knew the band and I shared the same culinary tastes.

I don’t have quite the same affinity with the cover of their debut LP Tragic - which looks like it’s ripped from a 1999 Ikea catalogue - but their low fi and shambling four-cylinder pop is just as cool. And one track is called “The Last Chiko Roll”.

Made up of five guys who play in a bunch of other Sydney bands including Housewives, Mope City, Adults, Bad Guys and Snotty Babies, the band know what it takes to write a relaxed pop song.

Check the final track of the album “Cotton”. Featuring Millie Hall of Bridezilla and Destiny 3000 on saxophone, the songs waltzes along with a lackadaisical self-assuredness. It’s cool in its complete “I’m-garn-down-to-shops-does-anyone-want-anythin?” nonchalance.
