Listen to an Early Bored Nothing Demo Before Their Final Shows

Before his final shows in Sydney and Melbourne this weekend we caught up with Bored Nothing's Fergus Miller.

In the relatively short time he’s spent writing and performing music as Bored Nothing, Melbourne’s Fergus Miller could well have been compared to Lou Barlow more times than any person deserves. Nothing against Barlow or his music of course but the fact that Miller calls his scrappy heart-on-sleeve indie pop Bored Nothing and that he could pass as the Sebadoh frontman’s younger brother and welll, you can see some justification in the comparisons.

But you also get the sense that Miller has always felt uncomfortable with his music likened to slacker 90s indie material and his interest in hardcore punk and contemporary Australian music is just as strong as it is for Dando, Barlow and Mascis.

Miller recently released his second album Some Songs, the follow to his 2012 self-titled debut record. He also announced the end of the Bored Nothing project with two final shows in Melbourne and Sydney.

He sent us an early demo of one his first tracks "Only Old" and we sent him some questions about the final Bored Nothings shows this weekend.

Noisey: Why are you finishing up? Doesn't the world have enough black metal bands?
Fergus Miller: Bored Nothing has always kind of pissed me off. It's pretty boring and unsatisfying to me, and the fact that people seem to like it much more than the myriad other projects I've had over the years always perplexed me. We're not quite done yet though, I still have a bunch of unreleased stuff under this name that I wouldn't mind seeing the light of day eventually. I'll definitely still be making music, I always have, but it'll be nice to not have to play it in front of people for a while. And lastly the world can and WILL never have enough black metal bands. How long has Bored Nothing been a thing?
Not long really, I think I shared the first tapes with those two words on it late 2011. I never really intended it to be anything so the fact it's petering out doesn't really phase me. The demo got a lot of attention. What do remember about the recording particularly the track we have here "Only Old".
One thing I do remember is sitting down with a four-track for the first time and this is the first thing I played. I just spewed it out. It was a weird feeling to be not looking at a screen while I recorded. It's pretty hard to go back once you've felt it. What were the highlights of playing in Bored Nothing?
Going overseas with my friends was cool, and playing with some great bands. So was stealing Alex Wall's rider without knowing that he was about to blow up my 1974 mosfet amp at the HiFi. I think John Lennon summed it up pretty well - "instant-karma's gonna get you". What are you looking forward to your farewell shows? Will you play "Only Old" as an encore?
I'm gonna try play the songs properly for once, wait till I get on stage to pull out the goon-bag I have hidden in my guitar case. I'm sure it will be cathartic, but I'll probably just try and be all punk and tell the audience they suck. Encores are for stadium bands…but if I were to do one, I'd save it for some maiden for sure. The trooper, or maybe number of the beast.

"Some Songs" is available now through Spunk.
