Legendary Artist David Bowie Dead at 69

Bowie’s son has confirmed the singer has passed away after a battle with cancer.

Legendary singer David Bowie has passed away, two days after his 69th birthday.

The news was posted to Bowie's official Facebook and Twitter pages early on Monday evening (AEDT). "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer," said the message. It continued, "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."

No further details were released at this time.

His son, Duncan Jones, also confirmed the news on Twitter.

In an extraordinary career that spanned 49 years the singer released 26 albums. His latest, Blackstar was released only last week.

Bowie won two Grammys and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He also appearanced in films, including Labyrinth and as a cameo in Zoolander.

The singer, born David Robert Jones in Brixton in 1947, is survived by two children: Duncan Jones and Alexandria "Lexi" Zahra Jones.
