After almost a decade of on-and-off again hiatuses, along side being repressed as the side project of Unit 21-turned-Wild//Tribe, 2015 marks the return of Tolar. Eight years may have passed since the band's last release, but knowing their track record, expectations were still high. Sometimes expectations are broken, but in the case of Tolar's new demo they weren't only broken they were fucking annihilated. Tolar's new demo incorporates more elements of black, death, and traditional heavy metal, without ever falling into that bland HM-2 Entombed-core hardcore trend—because despite the ever-growing influx of these bands, we really don't need another.What really sets Tolar apart from other contemporary metallic hardcore, crust, or whatever you feel comfortable calling it — is the fact that they can actually play their instruments. This isn't your average punk record that hits as many notes as possible per second and sells it as style. No, here there are classic metal-sounding leads interspersed between raging hardcore punk riffs. 2015 has just started, but it's a safe bet that Tolar's new demo will be among the best of the year.
