Noisey Exclusive: Writer: “Family Dinner"

When they were growing up and it was supper time, we have to guess that for Andy and James Ralph, the brothers behind Writer, riffs and hooks must have been staple dishes. They probably asked for seconds, scraped their plates and licked the ladle.

Noisey is thrilled to premiere “Family Dinner,” the latest offering from the San Diego art-rock duo. It’s a loud, scruffy bear hug of a song propelled by a refreshingly airy and organic drum boom paired with a liberally employed borderline haphazard tambourine shimmer. The vocals hint at a Neil Youngish world weariness but at the root of it, “Family Dinner” is a great take on garage brewed slacker pop ear candy. With Writer, Jeff the Brotherhood, U.S. Royalty, and Princeton at the forefront of this new rash of stellar brother bands popping up and managing to kick out the jams—sibling rivalries be damned—it makes you wonder what the hell was the matter with Liam and Noel for all those years?
