Northmix: Dr. MaD

Montreal's prince of soul-jazz, Dr. MaD has taken just about all he knows and thrown it into a typhoon of genre-bending, groove-filled madness that is his Northmix.

"It's the music for the mind, body, and soul that'll make you want to clean your bedroom and dance like your parents ain't home," MaD tells THUMP. One of Canada's Francophone capital's modern stars in ascension, MaD has little difficulty in finding the right tempo to take you back to the days where funk never strayed far away from the party. "This one is a tribute to those who keep pushing the funk and a respectful dedication to those who came before us and paved the way."

Through his involvement in Montreal's youth-centres, the Alaiz collective, local supergroup Nomadic Massive, and infinite other Montreal-based endeavours, MaD wastes no time in making his presence known on the scene.

There is a scent of soul and authenticity that circulates around MaD. By formulating the radio show, Voyage Funktastique with Walla P, the two have attempted to revive the boogie funk era. MaD has stayed true to his cause by nurturing new respect and excitement for a genre that has fallen unfairly out of the spotlight.

MaD released his album, The Good, The Bad, The Remix in 2014 on Parisian indie label, Laruche Records. Since then, he has been growing his rep at events throughout the city like Piknic Electronik, afterparties for Osheaga and Igloofest, as well as performing in Toronto, NYC, and LA along the way.
