Lorde and Kanye West are kindred spirits, seeking the emotional resonance in nimble flows, rap drums, and processed vocals. You can argue that there's no Pure Heroine without 808s and Heartbreak and maybe no The Life of Pablo without Pure Heroine. Having collaborated before on the soundtrack to the third Hunger Games movie, Lorde paid tribute to Mr. West during her Melodrama Tour stop in Chicago, Kanye's hometown. She performed a quick acapella version of "Love Lockdown," with the audience singing along to every word because the song is still extremely good. As far as acapella versions of popular songs go, this has to be among the least embarrassing.Lorde also sang a snippet of "Runaway" during her equally powerful "Fucked up and regretful after a night at the club" ballad "Liability," which she's been doing a lot on this tour but just adds to the general Kanye lovefest that was already going on in the Chi. This overall isn't the first time Lorde's covered West's work, too, as she performed "Hold My Liquor" a few times in 2014. You can watch fan video of the "Love Lockdown" cover above and "Liability/Runaway" below.
