Oregon Gets Huge Touchdown That Almost Wasn't

Oregon almost had a touchdown wiped away on the same kind of play that earned them a 99-yard touchdown against Utah State earlier this season.

Byron Marshall hauled in a 70-yard touchdown to put Oregon right back in the game and, oh man, it was almost wiped away. Marshall, like so many others we've seen recently, dropped the ball just as he was crossing the plane of the goal line. And the craziest part is, not only have we seen it a lot recently, we saw Oregon benefit from the exact same play against Utah State earlier in the season. Utah State's Kaelin Clay had a touchdown nullified because he dropped the ball before the goal line and Oregon (eventually) picked it up and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. Luckily for the Ducks, it didn't end the same way, but damn, that would have been a mess.

It was a great catch by the replay booth to even consider it--they might just do this all the time now--but it was eventually confirmed. The word choice is always interesting, "confirmed" meaning the call was correct upon review, as opposed to "stands" which implies there isn't enough video evidence to overturn the call on the field. It sure looked close, but the officials were satisfied that the ball did not come out before he crossed the line. Anyway, semantics aside, we now have a pretty good game.
