Exclusive: Listen to Cooly G's 'Hold Me' EP

Hear the Hyperdub house maestro's forthcoming, sensual EP.

In the wake of her smoky 2012 full-length Hyperdub debut Playin Me Cooly G has been busy. That album, which touched on everything from echoes of funky and dubstep to confessional R&B strains to Coldplay covers ("Coldplay are just sick," she tells me on the phone), was just the beginning. This month, she's releasing her Hold Me EP; three smouldering tracks aimed firmly at DJs, and later this year her follow-up album, which she tells me contains some of her most straight-up songwriting yet. "I can make any tune, R&B or whatever," Cooly G insists. She's casual when I'm so interested in the massive variety in her output and the artists she says she'd love to work with; Meek Mill, The Weeknd, Jessie J. "I just played my shit to Kode9 and he was like, 'What the fuck, how come you haven't done this shit [before]?' I was like, 'Bruv, I done this shit before you come along.'"

As a clue to the direction—or directions—she might be heading in next, "Hold Me" is as complex as club-focused EPs come."Molly" is a fitful house track that intensifies in a way that's both ecstatic and a little terrifying, and "Oi Dirty" is a rolling dub, created with the manic presence of Scratcha DVA and a cheeky vocal sample, but both offset by the softer tension of the sensual title track. The whole thing amounts to a nuanced insight into the mind of a restless producer, who is constantly taking everyone, Kode9 included, by surprise.

THUMP: So where was your head at when you were making the Hold Me EP?

Cooly G: Well, "Oi Dirty" was made probably about three years ago. I had Scratcha DVA round making beats; listening to Bob Marley, and drinking wine and smoking. Then I started this beat, and he was like "that's it, we got it!" And when I said "Oi, dirty", it was because we were having a conversation, but the mic was on. Basically, we were talking about when you're in a club, and guys touch girls. Like, if a guy was to touch my bum I'd just be like "Oi, diiiiirty."

"Hold Me", I started making in the daytime. The kids were running around, then them lot went to bed and I carried on. Then the baby got up but I was proper into the track by then, so I just had to put my breast out - I breastfeed still innit - and I just kept going. I didn't wanna stop making the tune! I was like, "Just get on the titty, quickly, come on!"

And then, "Molly", I don't know, I was going through some sort of phase. I think I was depressed last year, but I don't really know. I think I had a breakdown, slightly. There were times when I would just be really scared to go outside. It was hard for me to take my son to school. I had to hold on to the wall. I couldn't walk properly. I was just, fucked out of my head. Proper stressed out. Some people started coming round like, "What's wrong with you? You're fucked, you need to fix up," and then I just got out of it quickly. I had a little break to myself for a couple of weeks. So the "Molly" tune, I don't even know how that happened to be honest. It was a mad time.

I like how tongue-in-cheek it is that you called it "Molly". Where did that come from?

Cooly G: You know what, it wasn't even about drugs. I don't take drugs myself, but because everyone was on a hype about it I was like "This one's gonna be for all the molly heads who are just fucking wasted." It kind of happened so quick that I didn't even realise that I'd made the tune. I just make tunes every day all day long, when I've got the time. When the kids are just doing their thing, I'll make them really quickly. Sometimes I don't even know how it happened, it's just like, "Oh, that's sick…"

So, what's been keeping you busy over the last year or so?

Cooly G: In the last six weeks I've started a new LP, and I've basically finished it. It's proper different. It's crazy. it's sexy, it's rocky, it's - I dunno man, it's just sick. I'm so happy about it.

You say it's different, but there's so much difference across what you've put out already...

Cooly G: This is even more different! I've changed the tempos, I'm doing full songs, I've got featured artists on there... It's very sexy, trap-ish, R&B-ish, rock-ish. All different kinds of shit.

I like that you say "rock-ish", that's different to anything you've done before.

Cooly G: Yeah, basically there's a lot of heavy metal guitars in it. Proper punchy shit going on. Proper melodies, melodies that'll get stuck in your head.

So you were in more of a songwriting zone?

Cooly G: Lyrically I was just thinking of loads of things as soon as the beat was done, so I was in a good zone. That's why I went all out to finish it instead of longing it out. I just want to get on stage. I wanna do music videos. I wanna collaborate with people. I just wanna be out there. I feel like I haven't pushed myself properly. People know who Cooly G is or whatever, but I haven't really gone hard.
