There's a New Waxahatchee Song Called "Air," and She's Also Putting Out a New Album

Katie Crutchfield is putting out a new album called 'Ivy Tripp,' and the first song is great.

Katie Crutchfield gets it. It being a lot of things but specifically the weirdness (the malaise, perhaps?) of aimlessness, especially in your 20s. "You are patiently giving me every answer as I roam free," she sings during one of the climaxes of "Air," the lead single of her new album, Ivy Tripp, which she just announced today. It's sung like a battle cry over martial drumbeats that are anything but aimless—the production on "Air" is flawless, with distended drums, creeping guitars, and a choir of woo-oo-oos soaring throughout. "I left you out like a carton of milk," Crutchfield sings at another point, in what feels like the quintessential Waxahatchee lyric but is no less awesome as a result. And that's It: Simultaneously confused, triumphant, and pretty self-assured in what you're saying and doing even though you're not totally sure it's important.

Per Waxahatchee herself, "Ivy Tripp" is "really just a term I made up for directionless-ness, specifically of the 20-something, 30-something, 40-something of today, lacking regard for the complaisant life path of our parents and grandparents. I have thought of it like this: Cerulean Salt is a solid and Ivy Tripp is a gas… I think a running theme [of Ivy Tripp] is steadying yourself on shaky ground and reminding yourself that you have control in situations that seem overwhelming, or just being cognizant in moments of deep confusion or sadness, and learning to really feel emotions and to grow from that."

Pretty chill. Waxahatchee is going on tour this spring, and Ivy Tripp is out on Merge April 7. Listen to "Air" and check out the tour dates below:
