Watch FEMME's Video for "Heartbeat"

Nigel Godrich discovered London's latest future-pop contender…

A few weeks back FEMME, aka Laura Bettinson, dropped "Fever Boy." Its chorus bears a skippy, 60s girl group hook, while the verse is propulsive, squelchy electro. On paper this sounds like a questionable combination, but Bettinson makes it work: the song is bright and fiesty and the flip to its double A-side—"Heartbeat"—is equally fresh. A relatively skeletal cut of future-pop that throws down a marching stomp, clattering sticks, and the London singer's sparky tones, this spotlit video reminds us a bit of Fiona Apple's classic promo for "Criminal." We're also crushing hard on Bettionson's pale pink pixie crop and those two-ton gold earrings.

Sidenote: She's also makes glacial, minimalist electro-pop as Ultraísta, alongside Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and drummer Joey Waronker (Beck). But after hearing this stuff, we hope she's about FEMME all day, every day from here on in.
