Her Habits' Video for "Faster Than Sound" Is a Bananas Homage to 'The Odyssey' and 'Easy Rider'

Like all the best things in life this includes interpretive dance and pizza.

Last year we got super stoked on a new artist by the name of Her Habits, thanks in part to her neatly observed illustrations of feminine habits, but largely because she writes kick-ass songs which you can dip into on her debut EP, Northerner, now streaming in full below (it's out officially on 1.27). But the above video for "Faster Than Sound" (premiering above) is what's currently on press repeat.

For one, "Faster Than Sound" is the stand out track on her EP—a bleepy, cut 'n' paste pop banger dusted with cinammon and brown sugar and brass blasts. For another it features a lot of chic winter wear in the form of vintage fur coats, plus there's a lot of interpretive dance-meets-Tai-Chi moves in there. And the whole thing ends, as every day should, with a circle of carbs and melted cheese.

According to director Frank Young, this is his hat tip to Easy Rider, meanwhile Her Habits says it's a modern take on The Odyssey. OK then!

"I've always been a fan of the editing style of Easy Rider, in this case, the transitions," explains Young. "As far as the concept is concerned, I owe my wife, Diana, a great deal of credit, as she shot down my first idea involving a large scale game of musical chairs and said to consider changing the said chairs into the throne of Ithaca. And who doesn't like pizza?! So in short: Diana, Pizza, Dennis Hopper, and some dude named Homer."

The lady behind Her Habits—that's Joanie Wolkoff to her aunts and uncles—had this to add: "Frank and Diana's 17-month-old son Wyatt is a serene, all-knowing toddler oracle who pointed his cute little dimpled finger at all the choice spots when we first scouted for shoot locations. Then, choreographer Ken Peyser brought the dance ruckus to Frank's masterplan. Incidentally, our decade-old friendship started with The Gross Game. Ken and I would chew up chocolate bars and compete to see who could say the most horrible thing with their teeth covered in shiny brown matter. Who knew that fate would one day bring us all together on Gravesend Bay's shores in a modern interpretation of The Odyssey? Probably Wyatt the toddler oracle."

Probably.

P.S. This!

Kim Taylor Bennett is a sucker for fur and fantastical dance moves. She's on Twitter.
