Trofeo's "Game of Glass" is Dark and Synthy-strange

If Princess Mombi from 'Return to Oz' was a Moog nerd she might sound like this.

Trofeo are not a new band but they are a band of people with a new name. Last time we heard from Ericka Sance and co. they were called Sister Rogers and they gave us the bossanova shimmy of a tune "Midnight Sands." It was a welcome blast of sunshine in the midst of the brittle snap of winter. Newly christened Trofeo (that's trophy in Spanish), "Game of Glass" ploughs a darker furrow, with Ericka's lithe melodies casting an inky spell over brooding synths and hip-swiveling rhythms.

Do you remember Princess Mombi from Return to Oz? She was the evil witch woman who had a whole closet full of beautiful decapitated heads that she used to switch out the way most people change underwear. She'd glide around an enormous mirrored room playing some lute thing (I think), looking slyly gorgeous while plotting all kinds of evil. Well if Princess Mombi was really into Moogs and Depeche Mode she'd probably be making music like Trofeo.

Their EP is out via Manimal on 9/9
