This Week In Music And Fashion: Selena Gomez, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, and More

This week, Selena Gomez, Madonna, and Nicki Minaj ruffled all kinds of feathers.

The New Year is upon us! So Happy New Year — or “HNY” as all of my lazy ass friends like to say on Facebook. We wrapped up this week entering 2015, and while we’re all hoping for change, a lot stayed the same in music and fashion. That “new year, new me” idea hasn’t really kicked in yet apparently, considering the theme this week was TROUBLE. Yeah, your favorite artists were acting up or getting criticized for something or other. Lots of “WTF” moments to choose from, so we picked our favorites. Check them out, and avoid similar situations if you can. Or don’t, since ya know, you could end up in this column someday.

Selena Gomez Offends An Entire Nation With Her Ankle

Selena Gomez was visiting Abu Dhabi with some of her glamazon friends like Kendall Jenner, Cody Simpson, Shay Mitchell, and Gigi Hadid, and was naturally documenting all of the fun on her Instagram. At one point, she visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and took a photo, where she appeared to have her pants leg slightly lifted to reveal a bare ankle. Islamic tradition specifically states that you must be completely covered in a mosque, since it’s the holy place of prayer. There’s also an image of her with her girls rocking jilbabs, holding up peace signs, and pointing with their faces covered like they’re extras in M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” video. The situation was all bad, and Gomez was called disrespectful in a number of comments on her Instagram and the IG accounts of her crew. She took the pics down, obviously, but we have them because nothing dies on the internet. If you go on her account now, there’s a pic of her in a hijab in the middle of the desert holding a falcon. Guess that Sex & The City 2 shit didn’t work in her favor, so she opted to be a poised bird lover instead.

Diddy’s Yacht Party Was The Greatest NYE Party Ever

You might think you were ballin’ out of control with your $100 -per-ticket open bar at some dinky shithole in the suburbs, but Diddy had you totally beat. Like most rich people, he spent part of his holiday season in St. Barths, that magical island where the one percent of Hollywood go to get away from it all. This year was no exception: photos circulated of Leonardo DiCaprio on a beach with multiple women and a long beard, and of Rihanna running around in a bikini looking fabulous. RiRi was actually hanging on Diddy’s yacht for his New Year’s party, along with Russell Simmons and many others. Diddy teased the party on Instagram, and a week ago he was rumored to be in competition with Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who was also throwing a yacht party in St. Barths. Not sure who the winner was, but the fact that we’re even having this conversation is making me slightly nauseous, so let’s just call it a tie so I can go drink some ginger tea.

Madonna Pisses Everyone Off With Her Rebel Heart Covers

This ❤️#rebelheart had a dream!

Eek! Not like this, Madge. So if you’ve been following Madonna on Instagram, you’d know that the Queen of Pop has been teasing her new album Rebel Heart with a series of covers portraying historical heroes wrapped in black wire like her cover art. Figures like Jesus Christ, Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon, Basquiat, and Bob Marley have been featured. The theme was of Madge posting pics of people who inspired her with their respective rebellions. However, Madonna got the most flack when pictures of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, Jr. donning the same photoshopped black wire around their faces were added to her account. The argument was that Madonna was disrespecting these leaders by suggesting she was in the same league as they were; her comments blew up and a handful of thinkpieces arrived on the topic. She hasn’t removed the photos from her IG page because she’s Madonna, but she sure did annoy the hell out of some people with her art subjects.

Nicki Minaj Gets Called A Degenerate By A Retired Ku Klux Klansman

It seems like most days Nicki Minaj is immune to the haters, but how about when the Ku Klux Klan strikes? Famed retired asshole Klansman David Duke, the former grand wizard of the KKK, decided to hop on his podium again to spew some hateful bullshit this week that was mainly targeting “gangster rap” (is that classification even a thing anymore?). On his online radio show, Duke made Minaj a focal point in his rant, stating that Nicki is powered by Jewish people — who are apparently the real community in control of Black music by way of label owners, producers, etc. At one point, he referred to Nicki as an “absolute degenerate,” and called her “horrific and disgusting.” Duke also went on to add his valueless comments on police brutality, which are too absurd to even mention. Hopefully the Barbz swoop in at some point and come for this man. David Duke, you need to have several seats.

There’s A New Song Coming With Kanye West, Rihanna, Ty Dolla $ign, and Paul McCartney

Ever since Jay Z delivered his ode to Blue Ivy titled “Glory” and Kanye West had baby North with Kim Kardashian, the world was waiting for Ye’s ode to his child. Well, he delivered one this week with “Only One,” which featured Paul McCartney with Ty Dolla $ign on background vocals. The song is heartwarming (sung from the perspective of Kanye’s late mother, Dr. Donda West), and as much as it was a surprise to hear Paul McCartney on the track, rumor has it there’s more where that came from. In an interview with Billboard, Ty Dolla $ign discussed recording several songs — including “Only One” —with Kanye over the course of 24 hours. Ty revealed another song was in the works with him and Kanye again, but also featuring the return of Paul McCartney plus Rihanna. There’s even a video coming too, and soon. Stay on the lookout for that when you’re done crying over Kanye’s other song. Kathy Iandoli has no New Year’s resolution. Help her figure one out on Twitter.
