Icelandic Black Metal Gods Svartidauði Unveil 'Hideous Silhouettes of Lynched Gods'

Listen to the band's savage new EP, which brings together two rare and/or never-before-released tracks just in time for their European tour.

By now, diehards around the globe will be anxiously eyeing their mailboxes, awaiting the arrival of Svartidauði's new EP, Hideous Silhouettes of Lynched Gods. Unleashed by Terratur Possessions last week, the two-track vinyl features a pairing of new and old; fans might be familiar with "Deathtrip," which was first released back in 2010 as part of a split with Chile's Perdition and which has been streaming on the Terratur site for awhile in its updated form. The second song, "Hellish Visions," has never been released until now, and marks the first "new" music we've heard from Svartidauði since 2014's savage The Synthesis of Whore and Beast EP.

Both songs were recorded at Reykjavik's Emissary Studios in 2010—back when it was known by its original name, Manus Nigra (the vocals were recorded by ÁBZ in the band's old rehearsal studio, Grafhýsið). They present two very different sides of the same coin, too; they are both heavily inspired by the violent riots that overtook Iceland that same year, as the financial crisis worsened and the people responded with fire.

"While 'Deathtrip' is pretty much a poetic way of expressing my experience of being in the middle of the riots, the lyrics of "Hellish Visions" came to be after a very nasty mushroom trip—a Lovecraftian high if you will," explains vocalist and bassist Sturla Vidar. Look for our in-depth interview with him later this month, buy the EP here, and check out Hideous Silhouettes of Lynched Gods in its vicious entirety below (there's a rad live video of the band tearing through "Hellish Visions" here, too).

Svartidauði is also hitting the road with Primordial and Ketzer this week on the Ghosts of the Charnel House tour —catch them if you can, and if you offer the band a drink, be sure it's decent whiskey. 21/04/16 FR – Paris – Divan Du Monde
