Surrender the Spirit is the new project of NYC's married, multi-instrumentalist art weirdoes Johnny Rauberts and Kristen Sonntag. Full disclosure: Years ago, Johnny and I were in band together that we don’t talk about when we see each other. He was also once in a band that had the good sense to decline a tour with Jet. Regardless of the past, Surrender The Spirit is an entirely new animal for both him and Kristen. Eschewing the noisier indie vibes and rock'n'roll sound they both cut their teeth on, Surrender the Spirit is an exercise in pure Virgin Suicide and vicodin worship; even when the beat kicks in, the romantic haze remains.

The song "YNHID (You Never Held It Down)" is a sweet enough tune with hints of the undercurrent of passive aggressive sourness implied by the title. The video is relationship dynamics writ small; the colors change and charge, but the silhouettes of the lovers stay in place, not going anywhere fast.

Surrender The Spirit has an excellent new self-recorded EP, Premonition, on the way. Check out the video for "YNHID (You Never Held It Down)" exclusively right here.
