Style Rider: PINS Shimmers in Glitter

The Manchester post-punk foursome sparkles every time it hits the stage.

You can expect good taste from a band that 1) names their album after a poem by Emily Dickinson, and 2) has been known to rock head-to-toe Yves Saint Laurent in their music videos. That said, the ladies of British rock quartet PINS clearly know a thing or two about style. But of course, style is hardly skin-deep. Don’t go thinking that these noir-goth femme fatales can’t shred. In cat eyes and dark lips, PINS deliver glaring post-punk music that is anything but a female cliche. The Manchester four-piece have already toured as the opening act for both Sleater Kinney and Wire on European tours since releasing their first album Girls Like Us in September of 2013. We caught up with PINS vocalist Faith Vern for this week’s edition of Style Rider about essential fashion go-tos as the band prepares to release Wild Nights, their second full length LP, out 6/9 on Bella Union Records.

"They hide my sleep-deprived eyes. I buy and lose them a lot. My favourite pair was swept off my face by the Pacific Ocean. So there's probably a really cool crab under the sea wearing them right now."

Hip Flask

"When the rider is 12 warm cans of Carling, I opt for my custom made hip flask that I got courtesy of [PINS drummer] Sophie at Christmas."

Notebook

"Between all of the PINS, we must have a millions ideas a day, so I keep a notebook handy to make sure no gems get lost. Most of the time it’s ideas for videos to songs that we have yet to write. I also write all my lyrics in notebooks."

Glitter

"Applying glitter has become part of our pre-show ritual; we also like to apply it to the faces of whoever we are touring with. The most compliant band so far was The Growlers."

Hair straighteners

"I hate to be that girl but I want to be honest with you. My hair is massive if I don’t tame it so straighteners are essential."
