Style Rider: Phoebe Ryan Needs Her Party Hat and Shades for Staying Under the Radar

Sweet birds, and essential video games.

Photo via Columbia Records With her sweet, raspy vocals and blue-green hair, Phoebe Ryan is essentially a musical mermaid. Ryan first made waves with her mashup of R. Kelly’s “Ignition” and Miguel’s “Do You..,” but showed she could stand on her own with dreamy pop anthems like “Mine” and “Dead.” In the past, she’s collaborated with artists including Bea Miller and Skizzy Mars, but showed she can stand on her own with her 2015 EP Mine.

Since Ryan is currently touring with Charlie Puth, we caught up with her about what items she needs to stay fresh and fly on the road.

SUNGLASSES

It’s pretty cool when people can’t tell if you’re awake or sleeping, so these sunglasses are perfect. I got them at a gas station in Kansas, where this picture was taken. And of course, as you can tell, I was really feeling myself at this point in time.

VIDEO GAMES

Video games are super important for keeping yourself busy on tour. Here is me with Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, one of my favorite games of all time. I’ve beaten it 1,000 times but still play it whenever I’m on the road. Some of my other favorite games are Super Mario 64, The Sims and Minecraft.

PARAKEET

Harry Potter has an owl. I have a parakeet. Bert doesn’t have magical powers or anything, but he keeps me company when I’m home from tour. His hobbies are sleeping and eating grapes, just like me.

PIKACHU SOCKS

I have no matching socks except for these Pikachu ones, so they are pretty special to me. They were a gift from The Knocks from their trip to Tokyo, so I’ve been trying extra hard to keep this pair together.

PARTY HAT

If there is one thing you should learn from me, it’s that wearing a party hat everywhere is a very good idea for a few reasons: 1. party hats bring the party, 2. you look like a unicorn and 3. people will assume it’s your birthday and give you free stuff.
