Style Rider: Phantogram Needs Lots of Leather and a Token Spirit Animal

Must love dogs.

While Phantogram has been busy making music and touring the world since 2009, they’ve managed to get a reputation for style that’s on fleek when they’re onstage and in photographs. The duo—comprised of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel—released their most recent record Voices last year, however teamed up with Big Boi for a project this year called Big Grams. Next month, they’ll be heading out on the road with Muse. We’re crossing our fingers for a new album in the near future, but until then, we’ll just fawn over Barthel’s love for cut-outs and black clothing.

Since we’ve always been so struck by Barthel’s sleek bob, dark makeup and the plethora of leather looks she flaunts on stage, the dreamy singer gave us the low-down on what items she needs to look good onstage and on the road (and yes, she needs a spirit animal just like us).

Mac Cosmetics & Maje Leather Jacket

"For when you need to look bad ass backstage. I love Maje’s leather jacket. Waterproof makeup is important when you’re sweating your ass off in a 60 minute set. MAC makes the best waterproof makeup. "

Writing notebook

"We carry this notebook around with us everywhere. We write down any lyrics that pop into our head or inspiration for the next album."

Leroy

"Our spirit animal. Leroy comes with us on tour and hangs out on the tour bus. Instant good moods."

Chromat

"Chromat designs a lot of my stage clothes – I love their style, and it fits in well with the Phantogram look."
