Style Rider: MØ Unpacks Her Spice Girls-Indebted 90s Style

She gives us a sneak peek of what she's taking on the road.

is a 26-year-old pop singer from Denmark who first decided she wanted to pursue music after she got her hands on a Spice Girls album as a kid. A major record deal and one very impressive debut LP—No Mythologies to Follow—later, it's become clear that her vibey-90s style is more influenced by Posh and company than the electro-tinged, synth Scandi-pop she's making. (That said, her take on the Spice Girls classic, "Say You'll Be There," is easily one of the best covers this year.)

Born Karen Marie Ørsted, MØ (which is pronounced “mooo" and means "virgin" in Danish) has a personal style—especially when it comes to performing—that's as colorful and generally badass as her music. She's rarely without high pony, occasionally secured with a tie-dye scrunchie and often braided, all the better to whip around when she's singing on stage. She favors athletic wear, like Adidas track pants, sports bras, and baggy boxing shorts that wouldn't be out of place in a ring. Sometimes she's fancies things up with chunky platform sandals, but more often you can find her in colorful trainers (better for dancing, obviously).

She's heading to San Francisco this weekend to play at Culture Collide, and then continuing on her fall tour with Holychild, so we quizzed her about what'll be in her suitcase as she travels around the States.

A STUFFED ANIMAL NAMED STINKY "I grew up watching The Moomins television show all the time, and my father used to work a lot in Finland and would always bring home Moomin gifts. I have a Moomin tattoo on my right leg. So, of course, I've got a Moomin teddy too. It's the character, Stinky, an angry little brown creature. I bring him with me on every tour."

THIN SILVER NECKLACES "This is something that always complete a look in my book. I actually don't know what it is about thin silver neckless that's cool—but I think it's very cool. Sporty and sexy, I guess."

BLACK LEATHER FANNY PACK "A bumbag is something I've always had since back in my punk years. They're so practical and they remind me of being a smelly, free teenager, which is good. I love to wear a trashy leather bumbag if I'm wearing a dress, to even it out."

MY COMPUTER "I know this is a boring cliché, but it's really nice to have your computer with you on tour for all sorts of reasons. You can make music in Logic, waste your time watching braindead TV shows and movies, reply emails, and do interviews with VICE."

EYEBROW KIT "A guilty pleasure. I need to fix my eyebrows. That's it. It's because I used to plug my eyebrows all the time when I was a teenager, and then some parts of them never grew back out again, so I need to take care for them to not look weird."

YOGA MAT "I always thought that yoga and meditation and all that stuff had nothing to do with me. But I realized from touring for two years that it's a must if you wanna stay cool. So now I have a yoga mat with me everywhere. It can be kind of unpractical but it's worth the effort."
