Style Rider: Little May Loves Leather and a Cup of Joe

Aussies just really are the best—we’ve just gotta say it. Emotional indie-folk trio Little May does nothing to disprove that. The band, comprising Liz Drummond, Annie Hamilton and Hannah Field, makes music you want to weep to because their lyrics are so sweet and (oftentimes) sad. So, it’s not surprising that they'd be lovely people as well. Last year, the trio released their debut, self-titled EP that garnered comparisons to Haim, and next month they’ll release their full-length, For the Company.

Aside from sporting hair colors ranging from pink to blue, leather boots, and sporting matching outfits, Little May truly believes in the simplicity of a kind gesture—and there’s really nothing cooler than that. Prior to the band’s album release on October 9, Little May’s Liz Drummond spoke to us about about the band’s need to stay caffeinated and coordinate their outfits.

Matching Outfits

“One thing that inspires teamwork is wearing matching outfits. When we supported Mikhael Paskalev on his Australian tour, we all bought his merch and wore it at the same time. We still do. I am sure Mikhael was simultaneously flattered and weirded out. A good pair of trackies is also a must-have when you’re driving for days on end.”

Coffee

“Before we were touring a lot, we were all relatively specific about coffee. I must admit, in Sydney we do have very good coffee. Now that we’re on the road, any coffee is good. I just need the fix. I had never had a cold brew before I went to New York, and now I am hooked. This particular coffee (pictured) was from an awesome little place in Dublin.”

Denim and Leather

“Apart from the time we’re wearing matching trackies, we’re all usually wearing denim and leather, and a lot of black. I don’t think it’s just because we’re try hard rock stars. We get cold too, and I like to think I can get away with wearing the same leather jacket all the time. It’s just versatile and easy.”

Kind Gestures and a Sense of Humor

“It can be hard to stay sane after a three-month tour. It’s important to be nice to each other when things get a bit rough. We hug each other often and speak to each other in disgusting baby voices. Mark (our bass/keys player) offers amazing comedic relief, inventing weird games that keep us occupied on long drives. This is Annie surprising me with ice cream when we were leaving New York. She is a great gal.”
