Photo by David EdwardsExperimental pop trio All We Are is known for making music that’s slick, sophisticated, and very, very stylish. This makes their on-stage presence—just a few grungy kids in old tour tees and black jeans playing the hell out of a bunch of fancy instruments—all the more awesome.Rich 'O Flynn (drums, vocals), Guro Gikling (bass, vocals), and Luis Santos (guitar, vocals) hail from Ireland, Norway, and Brazil, which explains their all-over-the-map music references. The geographically-diverse threesome came together at college in Liverpool, quickly landed a record deal, and have since toured with fellow Brit synthpoppers Years & Years before even releasing their first album. They’ve very accurately described their music as “Bee Gees on diazepam,” and while the disco and funk influences on their self-titled record are undeniable, All We Are is not hitting the stage in leisure suits or gold lame like the retro bands that influence them. They’re often in jean jackets—sometimes all three of them—and despite her girlish, honey vocals, Guro sticks with a borrowed-from-the-boys uniform of button-ups, beanies, and dark denim. It’s a fun paradox that makes their live show worth seeing. Well, that and their electric talent. This summer, they’re playing a bunch of shows across Europe—Sweden, Norway, Germany, a bunch of other countries you’ve been wanting to visit—so if you find yourself abroad, look ‘em up. In light of their gig-packed schedule, we grabbed Guro to find out what she’ll be packing for a few months on the road.“There's shoes, then there's "shoes," and then there's Nike Airs. Probably the best shoe ever made, and they are bouncy.”“I’ve had this backpack since I was 11. I got it to carry my snowboard. It's still as good as new. Where I go, it goes and we still go snowboarding. Love it.”“I have a thing for denim and double denim. It's cool.”“Bad hair day, put a hat on. Good hair day, put a cap on. Can't go wrong.”“There’s something extremely therapeutic about kicking a ball! It's also pretty social and you get to run around while you're waiting for sound checks. Win-win, really.”
