Holy Shit, Streaming Music Made More Money in 2014 Than CDs

Musicians, it's time to farm Spotify plays in order to make your living.

According to a recent report done by the Recording Industry Association of America (the good ol' RIAA,) the US music revenue statistics showed that streaming music made up 1.87 billion dollars in 2014 compared to the sale of CDs of 1.85 billion. While this isn't an incredibly high margin, it is important to keep in mind how new streaming music is in regards to making up revenue. Digital downloads still make up the bulk portion of money made from music last year, but it seems with the ease of streaming music will help it potentially catch up in the years to come. This year alone, we've seen new twists and turns in the music industry like "Hypnotize" by The Notorious B.I.G. getting back onto the Billboard charts based on popularity from a viral video. Music today is benefitting immensly as well, with Kendrick Lamar's new album breaking all time streaming records and making over one million dollars in the span of 24 hours. Time will tell what specific ways we will be affected by this advent of streaming. One thing is certain though: Music is still awesome.
