Single Mothers - “Hell Is My Backup Plan”

Single Mothers have a new album out. So does the band Dads. Has anyone made a joke about those two hooking up? [searches internet and sees it has been made literally countless times] Ah. Well… it’s still pretty funny. Anyway, this song is not from SM’s new album. It’s from their old EP but it’s about hating on smug people and with that, I am D-O-W-N.

Autobahn - Autobahn 2

Someone needs to put this Autobahn ecord in the US. Absolutely SEARING post-punk that owes just as much to Joy Division, Public Image Limited, and others as it does to good old, driving punk rock. Fuck this shit rips.

Sam Hunt - "Break Up In A Small Town"

When your entire ethos can be surmised in a single tweet, you're on your way to being a breakout artist. When I saw Sam Hunt's name while browsing my Twitter timeline, he was described by Craig Jenkins as "a football player turned country singer with a healthy taste of R&B." After I read that, I listened to Sam Hunt's album Montevallo and I haven't been able to stop. Seriously, it's problematic how much I listen to this album. The best reason I've been able to come up with for why I've become obsessed is that Sam Hunt is essentially Taylor Swift for bros who grew up on Usher. At it's core, it's country music, but it's got breakdowns, double-time rap, and in the case of "Break Up In A Small Town" a pithy bass drop mixed in with the strings. It was hard for me to choose a single song from Montevallo, because it's one of the only albums I've heard since Acid Rap where I was upset when I found out listening to the last song. The world will be a better place if you listen to Sam Hunt.

Iceage - "Against the Moon"

I can't get enough of Iceage's Plowing Into the Field of Love. It's messy and ugly and beautiful and funny and goofy and overstuffed and precocious and you should listen to it immediately while reading frequent Noisey contributor Zach Lipez's review of the record over at The Talkhouse. For me, the last three songs of the record—"Against the Moon," "Simony," and the damn near perfect "Plowing Into the Field of Love"—are a mini-movement, representing our hero Elias Rønnenfelt's reaching rock bottom, picking himself up again, and then realizing he's going to be stumbling forever, and that's OK. If that sounds lame, just ignore me and listen to the song.

Brian Fresco – “Bae”

We premiered the video for this song off Brian Fresco and Tree's excellent SoulMoney EP earlier this week, and I've had the song stuck in my head more or less ever since. It's a pretty straightforward song, but it's a totally seamless fusion of kind of the soulful, sing-song aesthetic that Chicago artists like Chance the Rapper and Saba have embraced with Auto-Tune and Chicago's more Auto-Tuned subgenres of bop and drill. Anyway, it's catchy and kind of drunkenly charming, and I recommend it.

Duran Duran - "Ordinary World"

Last weekend I spent a lot of time listening to EDM. It wasn't my choice. It went into my ears by accident, which is is bound to happen if you're on an island that's throwing an event advocating poolside beats almost 24/7 for four days straight. It was pretty dope, but super exhausting too. There was an amazing 4 AM moment when some friends who, despite coming down from acid, managed to jack a soundsystem and plug it in by a pool that was far removed from all the mayhem.They played Sade ("Cherish the Day"!), they played Prince, they played this song by Duran Duran. It was a moment of calm, a moment of joy, an emotion I feel times 10 when I watch this video and witness the beauty of the bride's lampshade hat and mega-bow gown. Dionne from Clueless would totally rock that.
