Staff Picks and Good Shit for the Week of November 14

Did you guys see those Kim K photos this week? Man oh man, what a larger-than-average butt, huh? It probably fits in Pharrell’s big hat (because it’s so big). What would be funny would be if someone out there on the internet would take that photo and change it a little bit, like maybe put something else where the butt goes. Or maybe put a different face on her face. We’re just spitballing here. We hope someone does something like that soon. What were we talking about? Oh right, music. Here’s the music the Noisey editors were listening to this week.

I'm posting this AGAIN, because it rips and is one of the best records of the year and you should know it and I love you guys and I want you to look cool in front of other people and/or get laid constantly.

This song is tight because it was made buy a 23-year old Estonian rapper who loves horses and isn't letting the fact that he can't speak English stop him from rapping. Everyone has a motivational story, and Tommy Cash's is mine. Plus there's a pretty good chance that this kid is "next up" on the weird-rap circuit. If teens will start wearing bucket hats and posing for pictures with their middle fingers dragging down their eyes because Yung Lean does it, then what's to keep them from following Tommy Cash? He's got great hair and finger nails, but seems to regularly ride horses. Ooh, duality! Also this song samples Enya, so I think it's pretty clear by now that this is worth your time.

Ireland's latest crop of death metal bands have just been just killing it lately, and Vircolac is the newest entry in a pretty heated race towards the top. New releases from ZOM and Malthusian set the tone for an excellent year for Irish metal, with Primordial, Cruachan, and a few others I'm going to get shouted at for forgetting following closely behind. I've been waiting to hear some actual music from this Dublin project since it came into being earlier this year, and the first snippet doesn't disappoint. A new interview on Metal Ireland gives a solid look at the band's motivations and debuted a new tune off their upcoming demo (out this winter on Iron Bonehead). "Confessio" is a deeply satisfying slab of heavy, dark, dismal death that slots in nicely alongside other bands of their ilk but hints at diabolical intentions for the future.

This track just made it as our pick to represent the entire United States on our sweet new Noisey United compilation (go check it out for awesome picks from our editors around the world). Which is good because it certainly represents what this American has been listening to. I think I legitimately lost like four or five hours of work this week because I was listening to this song instead of doing something substantive (sorry Fred, hopefully you won't read past your own entry here). At first, "I Understand" sounds a little like it could be any other Makonnen song, but this is where the chemistry between the two Atlanta dudes becomes apparent—Key! swoops in with his own singing and steals the show. If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I've been shouting the phrase "I'm about to turn this car around" at random intervals to Eric for the last few days. The actual singing of that phrase great, but when Key! hits the follow-up in an Auto-Tuned falsetto, it really becomes transcendent. It's like 808s and Heartbreak Kanye, a little bit shaky and ugly but also beautiful and raw. That's the other thing I really like about this song: It's right on the verge of being clumsy and bad and unlistenable. And that's how it should feel, since it's about being in the kind of testy relationship limbo where you're not particularly at your best—Key!'s lyric of "you're making me evil" is one of the best encapsulations of this I've ever heard—and ugliness is part of the picture. But out of that ugliness comes a very nice song, which I haven't been able to stop listening to.

Yeah, Chief Keef recently put out like 47 new mixtapes, most of which he produced (and even did a tape with Gucci Mane), but the best piece of music he's recently released is "Valley," which is from Young Chop and features Keef. Unsurprisingly—and this is probably because Young Chop is in charge of production—it has everything I want in a Sosa song: massive beats, inaudible autotune, and a direction connection to that feeling in your stomach that screams, "OK, IT'S TIME TO TURN UP RIGHT NOW."

I just started listening to music this week but so far I LOVE IT! Why haven’t you guys told me about this stuff? It sounds great and you can listen to it pretty much anywhere. I love doing music! My friend Dave Anthony at The AV Club told me about this particular musics. It’s a band called Bust! and I know I’m new to the whole music thing but I think it’s great!
