Staff Picks and Good Shit for the Week of December 5

Here's what the Noisey editors were listening to this week while getting their hair did for Lil Wayne.

Listen, we're gonna be honest with you. This is where we usually talk about all the good music we've been listening to this week. But we have a big-ass anniversary party to go to in a few hours and we're just sitting here talking about all the selfies we're gonna take with Lil Wayne. So like, here's our music or whatever. Thanks for understanding. Noisey loves you.

Frank Ocean - "Memrise"

Frank Ocean released a new song last week. You have probably listened to it, so I'm currently failing at my job of providing you with dope new music you haven't heard, but then again, I don't care because I've listened to this song like 700 times this week and I'm still trying to understand its beauty. Frank Ocean will probably be one of those artists who releases a legendary record like every 10 years, so we gotta appreciate it whenever we can.

Black Flag - “Police Story”

Having grown up on a healthy diet of punk and hardcore, I’ll say that there are elements of it that you gradually give up as you get older. Being a grown ass man, I no longer feel the need to spike my hair and dye it green anymore, for example. I don’t need to wear a chain wallet or cover my entire sweatshirt in band patches. So you’d think hating the police would be one of those things that would grow to seem childish as well. But as long as cops continue to murder unarmed citizens with absolutely no consequences, hating the police will be one of those quirky punk “things” that never goes out of style.

Meek Mill - "Dreams Worth More Than Money Freestyle"

Freedom is a weird concept that most people take for granted. It's like that story about the fish who was asked what the temperature of the water is like, to which the fish replied "what's water?" Most people aren't aware that freedom exists until they don't get to experience it anymore, or until it affects them on a personal level. On July 11th, Meek Mill's freedom was temporarily put on hold as he was sentenced to six months in prison. Since that time, Meek has missed out on a lot of things, like the nationwide obsession with the Serial podcast, Taylor Swift becoming New York's official delegate, and most importantly, his September 9th release date for his second studio album, Dreams Worth More Than Money. So let's remember the passion with which Meek was rapping before being sent away, when he recorded this YouTube video of him fooling around in the studio.

Moxiie - "Jilted"

When I wrote about this song yesterday I thought it was about a guy who broke a girl's heart but the girl still wants to be with him and still loves him even though the guy is like whatever babes. I really loved the video and the song itself but found the lyrics a tad, well, confusing. Then I found out (thanks Twitter! Thanks Moxiie!) that the song was actually written after Moxiie Sykped her dad after not speaking to him for ten years. Suddenly the lyrics came into focus and "Jilted" is now devastating in a way that really hits home. Kim Taylor Bennett, Style Editor

Sam Hunt - "Break Up In A Small Town"

On its surface, this is the song that you might pay attention to off of country sensation Sam Hunt's excellent album Montevallo because it has a drop, and, if there is one thing people love, it's talking about how dubstep is ruining music and in particular how other genres creeping into country to make it Bad. Personally, I tend to be somewhere between indifferent toward and in favor of drops, and here I would argue that they are in fact the least interesting thing about this song, which I can't stop listening to. What's really cool to me is Sam Hunt's detailed songwriting—the image of the grass not yet growing back over his ex's tire marks, the moment of him and his ex passing as he leaves a party—and the way that this song is stuffed full of micro-hooks and little melodies that only last for a few seconds. I like his technique of breaking from spoken word into melody, which feels very intimate and cool. It also reminds me of Drake in its seamlessness, which is appropriate because Sam Hunt is kind of like a country Drake and he even sings the words "so far gone" as a mini-melody in this song, which has to mean something. Anyway, this is a really great song. Go check out Sam Hunt. Kyle Kramer, Editor

Seinfeld Theme (But Modarn)

Twenty years ago, VICE was started. Now, VICE is modarn, and we do all sorts of cool things like throw parties with Lil Wayne and conduct in-depth investigations about the rise of the Plague in Madagascar. Seinfeld was on TV twenty years ago, as well. Sadly, it is no longer on TV. But what would it be like if it were modarn? Would Krame switch to all-soylent diet? Would Jary get upset when his GFF Tayler Swift write song about Keny Banya? Would Elane twerk with the little kicks? Would Gerge release industrial albem? We will never know. But thanks to some intarnet hero, we know what the Seinfeld theme song would sound like if modarn. Drew Millard, Who Is Not @Seinfeld2000 Drew on Noisey | Drew on Twitter

THYRFING - VALDR GALGA

Valdr Galga by Thyrfing Ever since we premiered that Einherjer track earlier this week, I've been on a serious Viking metal kick. Earlier today, I discovered that Hammerheart Records' Bandcamp page has a good chunk of Swedish OGs Thyrfing's discography, and I've been knee-deep in epic battle hymns ever since. When I was in high school, I was obsessed with Thyrfing (especially the album Valdr Galga) and as it turns out, not much has changed. Onward to Valhalla! Kim Kelly, Contributing Editor
