The Singles Club with Mish Way, Canada Pride Edition: Mormon Crosses and Pregnancy Scares

Meet two of Canada's most slept-on punk bands.

PREGNANCY SCARES

From: Ottawa, Ontario
Sounds Like: Exactly what it is (a bunch of men playing hardcore with their pants falling off.)

This week my two bands are quite biased. I know the members of Pregnancy Scares (and Mormon Crosses) quite well. Our bands have played many shows together. We’ve run around Ottawa together. We’ve seen each other puke and piss and pile out—whatever. They were around for the tour when Kenny wore basketball shorts and dress shoes. Pregnancy Scares have seen my band at our most demented. And we have seen them at theirs too. But, I don’t think this really has anything to do with how decent a hardcore band Pregnancy Scares are because I was a fan before I was a friend. Pregnancy Scares are set to release a new EP, Mind Control, on Deranged Records: It's four perfect hardcore tracks. No complaints. I don’t really want to sit here and try to describe the music for you. Just listen to the song “Master Race” (below) and eat glass or something.

MORMON CROSSES

From: Vancouver, BC
Sounds Like: The voice I wish would speak to me in my head instead of my own

Mormon Crosses is the three-piece project of Jesse Taylor. Jesse has been in a lot of bands, more than I can count or even really type out on this list (Live Girls and Twin Crystals, to name a few). Since I started playing music, he has always been around in the scene, pumping out secret hits that become instant classics within the family. In the first jam space I had on Hastings Street, Jesse was across the hall, and he would hear my band—the shitty Joy Division rip-off thing I had with my ex-boyfriend—practicing. Then one year Jesse and I ended up in a cover band together for Halloween and became friends. I’d go over to his place to listen to records or watch old bootleg videos of Nirvana and Hole concerts on his crappy VCR. He has recorded many of my bands in his studio Nite Prison (which hosted shows and put together a compilation of Vancouver punk bands a few years back) and has always produced music in this really pure way, just doing it because he can’t really do anything else. After Twin Crystals faded out, Jesse started Mormon Crosses (rounding it out with Casey Prexton on bass and Bryxe K.P.A. on drums) , which I think is his best work yet. Listen to the track “Our Language” below and check out the rest of their demos on their Bandcamp page.
