Blast Off Into the Future with Set and Setting's Visual Odyssey of a New Video

Yesterday we premiered a new song from Tempel, an Arizona duo who are creating some of the best instrumental metal out there right now (you can read me gush about it here). They're definitely unique, but are far from alone in the field. As bands like Animals As Leaders and Scale the Summit command bigger and bigger venues and the warped black free jazz on Mastery's Valis thrills the critics, their kindred spirits in Set and Setting have been quietly inching towards greatness with every release.

Unlike Tempel, this Florida outfit stays faithful to the progressive post-metal sound that so many heavy instrumental acts follow, but updates the approach considerably from its early 2000s heyday. Set and Setting's music is vivid and cinematic; the guitars play freely with tension and form, with haltering notes skittering into swells and huge, bombastic section crashing into catharsis. The "post-classical" tag they've bestowed upon themselves works pretty well, though I'd venture to throw in words like post-rock, shoegaze, and even post-hardcore to describe their sound.

However you'd like to characterize what Set and Setting is doing, it's hard to argue against either the quality or the sheer beauty of what they've created here. Explore a futuristic cityscape with them in this stunning new animated video for "Coping," now playing exclusively here on Noisey, and grab the record from Prosthetic.
