Scrapbook: Hot Girls Eating Pizza Edition

The popular Instagram account flipped through their photo book of musicians eating pizza.

Hot girls and pizza: can you possibly think of two things that go better together? Neither could Brooklynite Marta Freedman when she started her Instagram photo project “@hotgirlseatingpizza.” As opposed to @youdidnoteatthat or your standard model accounts, Freedman has taken the focus to real girls.

It all began back in 2013 when she taking photos of friends and strangers eating pizza on a disposable camera. Once she got a Polaroid later that year, everything went into motion. A year later, when Freedman was in need of some side-husting busy work, @hotgirlseatingpizza was born. “I was going through some tough times in my personal life so I was using [HGEP] as a coping mechanism to distract myself and keep busy,” says Freedman. “I was also feeling a little unfulfilled at my desk job working in fashion, so it was a good creative outlet.”

Although Freedman isn’t a trained photographer, she’s found her niche in art-directing both the girls and pizzas. She’s all about getting words written with pesto on her slices, positioning Polaroids on the pizzas and also fixing your hair before you take a big ‘ol bite. Freedman says, “I almost always try to post the Polaroid on the piece of pizza that’s about to be eaten, was eaten or is half-eaten.”

Since HGEP launched, Freedman has photographed girls in the fashion, music, food and editorial industries, but as a huge music fan herself, she’s definitely trying to expand on the musicians she captures. On her dream list? Best Coast, Samantha Urbani, Habibi, BANKS, FKA Twigs, Charli XCX, Iggy Azalea and Stevie Nicks. Although, she’s already on her way to fulfilling that dream having shot Zoe from ASTR, Meg Myers, Nikki from Little Daylight, Elle King and Catey Shaw.

But she's not just stopping at photos. While creating HGEP, Freedman also started a regular deejay set at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right. “In the initial months of HGEP, I talked about doing a party with Two Boots at their location in Brooklyn,” Freedman dished. “I’m open to having more deejay nights at other venues, and I definitely want to do a gallery night when I get over 100 more pictures where I invite all of the girls that have been photographed for pizza.”

We asked Freedman to dig through her Polaroids and tell us about the musicians and successful ladies she’s indulged in slices with this year.

Marta: Zoe was the first musician I shot for HGEP. I was a huge fan of her yoga classes, then became a huge fan of her music. They were playing at Converse Rubber Tracks around the corner from my apartment, so I went to Sal's (my go-to) and asked them to write ASTR on a slice in pesto. The guys at Sal's were confused since they usually just write "XOXO" on my slices, but Zoe loved it so it was a success!

My friend Sam and I saw Meg Myers at Governor's Ball, and then I saw she was playing a show the next day at Brooklyn Bowl. I reached out to her on Instagram and she was down, so I picked up some pizza. Apparently Brooklyn Bowl is like Fort Knox when it comes to bringing in outside food. Somehow security let us around back and we sat in the green room with the pizza while she played. I don't think we were supposed to be there, but it was fun. This slice is also from Sal's.

Little Daylight was so awesome. When we were emailing, they were telling me how much they love pizza and how they did a recent interview at L&B Spumoni Gardens. I brought them a pie from Two Boots (The Larry Tate) and you can't tell in the photo, but Nikki is actually sitting at the drum set.

My friend Leah knows Elle and introduced us at Baby's All Right. We had a few @hotgirlseatingpizza parties at Baby's—I DJ and get some pies from local pizzerias. Two Boots happened to be sponsoring us that night. I haven't posted this photo on the Instagram yet—waiting for Elle to play on Late Night with Seth Meyers in a few weeks! I keep an OCD schedule for when I post.

Catey is so sweet and obviously super photogenic. We met at Best Pizza on Havemeyer, which is one of my faves. I feel like you really get to know someone on a different level when you get pizza with them—I found out Catey actually lives with one of my friend's boyfriends. Pizza brings people together!

Ilana Kaplan is a hot girl that loves pizza, pictured below. She's on Twitter.
